HIMACUL
Highlands Macadamia Cooperative Union Limited
HIMACUL is a farmer owned co-operative union representing smallholder macadamia farmers and their district level cooperatives across Malawi. It provides structure, governance and collective strength, supporting tree planting, advice on agroforestry and enabling farmers to pool harvests, negotiate fairer prices and plan for the long term.
HIMACUL is Fairtrade certified, receiving premiums that support both household income and community investment. Nutcellars is committed to purchasing the full macadamia crop produced by its partner’s farmers, creating predictable demand and greater financial security.
By sourcing directly through HIMACUL, Nutcellars builds enduring trade relationships rooted in transparency, fairness and mutual respect.
NMT
Neno Macadamia Trust
NMT, a UK based CIO, has for more than 20 years been working alongside macadamia farming families in the Neno and other regions of Malawi. It strengthens livelihoods and builds resilience by supporting sustainable farming, agroforestry and community development initiatives.
Part of its work focuses on carbon offsetting through its Carbon Damage Mitigation Certificates (CDMCs). These certificates connect measured CO₂ emissions with certified macadamia agroforestry, creating a direct way for supporters to fund trees that absorb carbon while also supporting smallholder farmers through ongoing financial backing.
Nutcellars supports NMT through long term partnership, helping ensure that growth in the UK translates into meaningful impact in Malawi.
Our Co-op
Our Co-op leads the “Our Malawi Partnership”, a collaborative initiative connecting UK co-operative retailers with Malawian smallholder co-operatives. The partnership brings together Nutcellars, Liberation, True Origin and Revolver to strengthen trade links and create sustainable routes to market for Malawian products.
Through this model, smallholder co-operatives gain access to UK retail networks while retaining co-operative ownership and governance. The initiative reflects shared co-operative principles and supports long term, transparent trading relationships between producers and retailers.
Liberation Foods
Liberation is a pioneering Fairtrade organisation working to create equitable trading relationships between smallholder farmers and international markets. It has played a key role in building routes to market that prioritise farmer ownership and long term value.
By championing Fairtrade principles, Liberation has helped establish standards that protect producer interests while ensuring high quality products reach consumers.
Nutcellars’ wider network and heritage are closely connected to this Fairtrade movement, reinforcing its commitment to trade that works for farmers as well as customers.
